Remix says "debug_traceTransaction" doesn't exist/is not available when trying to run the debugger on the polygon. I've tried this on alchemy and the public RPC and it still errors.... it works fine on goerli and localhost. Why is it so?

Public RPC doesn't support trace and debug transactions, you have to use private RPC from alchemy or quick node. Only the premium version of these RPC provider support trace and debug transactions. You can visit these RPC provider's website and check the features and plan options according to your requirements. Ex. https://www.quicknode.com/pricing
